Sea Monsters

The popular belief in antiquity and the Middle Ages held that the oceans were inhabited by horrendous creatures that swallowed the ships of those who ventured far from the coast. The fragility of the vessels in the face of the enormous waves of storms and the sight of the endless and unknown ocean encouraged these beliefs. Each culture had its monsters, which varied between sea serpents like Jormungandr, Leviathan, monsters with many heads like Scylla and Hydra, the Kraken and Cthulhu that personified the fear of great storms and the destruction of ships. Not forgetting the mermaids that represented the desires and consequent dangers of the sailors' delusions after so much time at sea.
When I found some jellyfish of the species Chrysaora africana on the sands of Katembe beach in Mozambique, the image of these monsters came to mind. I imagine that when our ancestors came across one of these jellyfish on the beach, their imaginations ran wild, and they thought they were offspring of the enormous monsters that inhabited the oceans. From then on, it all became history.
A crença popular na antiguidade e Idade Média era que os oceanos eram habitados por criaturas horrendas que tragavam os barcos daqueles que se aventuravam para longe da costa. A fragilidade das embarcações diante das enormes ondas das tempestades e a visão do oceano interminável e desconhecido incentivavam estas crenças. Cada cultura tinha seus monstros, que variavam entre as serpentes marinhas como Jormungandr, Leviatã, os monstros com muitas cabeças como a Cila e a Hidra, o Kraken e o Cthulhu que personificavam o medo das grandes tempestades e da destruição dos navios. Sem esquecermos das sereias que representavam os desejos e consequentes perigos dos delírios dos marinheiros depois de tanto tempo no mar.
Quando encontrei algumas águas vivas da espécie Chrysaora africana nas areias da praia do Katembe em Moçambique, me veio a imagem destes monstros. Imagino que os nossos ancestrais ao toparem com uma água viva destas na praia tenham dado asas à imaginação e considerado que se tratavam de filhotes dos enormes monstros que habitavam os oceanos. Daí para frente tudo virou história.
