Areias do Katembe
Katembe´s Sands
2023 - 2024
When I lived in Maputo, Mozambique, I enjoyed weekend walks on Katembe Beach, in Maputo Bay, facing the city. I photographed boats, fishermen, children swimming in the sea, and the many things the sea brought to the beach; but a recurring theme was the patterns that formed in the sand.
Part of Katembe Beach has cliffs, and when the tide rises, the waves crash against the base of the cliffs, dragging materials of different colors and textures onto the sand. At low tide, these materials run off the sand, forming designs and patterns. Sometimes I saw patterns that resembled feline fur, other times it looked like marble or even human skin.
I no longer live in Maputo, and the walks along Katembe are a thing of the past, but I continue to photograph the patterns in the sand of the beaches I walk on..
Quando morava em Maputo – Moçambique, gostava de caminhar nos finais de semana na Praia do Katembe, na baia de Maputo, de frente para a cidade. Fotografei barcos, pescadores, meninos tomando banho de mar e as tantas coisas que o mar trazia para a praia; mas um tema recorrente eram os grafismos que se formavam na areia.
Uma parte da Praia do Katembe tem umas falésias e quando a maré sobe as ondas batem na base delas arrastando para a areia materiais de cor e texturas diferentes, que na maré baixa escorrem pela areia formando desenhos e grafismos. As vezes eu via padronagens que lembravam o pelo dos felinos, outras vezes parecia mármore ou até mesmo a pele humana.
Não resido mais em Maputo e os passeios pelo Katembe ficaram para trás, mas continuo fotografando as padronagens das areias das praias por onde caminho.
